Aboriginal Relations
At Penn West, we recognize that successfully developing oil and gas resources in our area of operations involves listening, understanding and then responding to the interests and concerns expressed by local Aboriginal communities. We strive to achieve a clear line of open, honest and consistent communication with the communities in which we operate or plan to operate. We recognize that decisions based on communication and collaboration often result in new and beneficial ways to achieve project development.
Penn West recognizes and respects the rights of aboriginal peoples, their history, unique culture, heritage values and knowledge. Consultation and engagement with Aboriginal communities is an ongoing and adaptive process led by our Aboriginal Relations team which takes many forms across both our existing and planned operations in Western Canada. Penn West regards its regulatory and legal obligations seriously and by exceeding industry standards, seeks to build and continue the long term relationships we have established.
Penn West supports the objectives expressed by many Aboriginal community leaders of promoting education and training opportunities within their communities and we are a proud partner with Sunchild E-Learning.
Penn West also respects the desire of Aboriginal people to participate in economic opportunities associated with industrial development within their traditional territory. We actively seek participation by qualified local individuals, contractors and businesses in Penn West operations, including the construction and operation of our projects.
Penn West is further committed to supporting opportunities which showcase Aboriginal culture. We are proud to support the Indian Village at the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, and the Kiyanaw Pavillion, a First People's Showcase at Edmonton's Capital Ex.
At Penn West we recognize that trust and mutual respect are the primary building blocks for meaningful communication and long term relationships.
