Penn West in the Community
Community investment is a fundamental part of the corporate culture at Penn West. As a company, we are committed to making a positive impact in the communities where we live, work and play.
Penn West’s Community Investment Committee meets monthly to review and discuss funding proposals. All proposals and requests for funding should be submitted via the company’s electronic Community Investment Form.

Our 2008 Community and Values Report demonstrates where we stand as a company, how we hold ourselves accountable to social responsibility, and reflects the accomplishments that cannot be captured on a balance sheet. Education
Through the support of educational initiatives, Penn West is able to encourage and support scholastic enrichment. We are also able to form respectful relationships with Aboriginal communities through the education and understanding of impacts faced in our diverse communities through partnerships and consultations.
Some of the educational initiatives and scholarship programs supported by Penn West include:
| Olds College: Penn West provides annual awards in the areas of Land Reclamation and Environmental Stewardship. | |
| SEEDS Foundation: Penn West has partnered with the SEEDS Foundation to promote the Energy Literacy Series (ELS) for school children. The program provides an excellent background for many learners that will enable them to gain the understanding of the various forms of energy in our society. | |
| University of Regina: Through the Building Dreams and Futures Campaign, Penn West is proud to offer a bursary and scholarship through the school of Engineering. | |

Kindersley & District Health and Wellness Centre: Penn West has assisted this facility in acquiring state-of-the-art imaging machines in order to speed up diagnosis and treatment times. Funding was used to renovate X-ray rooms in addition to purchasing new digital X-ray equipment. |

Fort St. John (FSJ) Hospital Foundation: Penn West is a proud corporate sponsor of this initiative, recognizing the dedicated fundraising efforts made by local community residents to reach the foundation's goal of purchasing a new CT Scanner for the hospital. |
Environment
Protection of our environment is integral to the success and longevity of our future. Penn West endeavors to leave its mark, but not in the form of an environmental footprint. We support programs that focus on sustainability, energy conservation and environmental education.

Ducks Unlimited Canada (DUC): Penn West has provided funding for the Beaverhill project which provides protection, restoration, and conservation to ensure the long term security of this habitat and contribute positively to the waterfowl and wildlife habitat. |

University of Alberta - Burrowing Owl Project: In partnership with the University of Alberta, Penn West funds a research project that examines the effects of oil and gas development on the nest-site selection, reproductive success and habitat of the Burrowing Owl. |

Trout Unlimited Canada: Penn West is in the final year of a three year project to improve the water quality in streams within the Frenchman River watershed, focusing primarily on streams which hold or are capable of holding native or naturalized trout populations. The goal is to improve water quality and fish habitat through the restoration of healthy riparian areas; and provide an educational component aimed at demonstrating to current landowners and students (future landowners) the importance of healthy streams and riparian areas in watersheds. |

We support the construction and maintenance of the facilities and community infrastructure which builds stronger communities by creating improved places to live, work and play.

Estevan Civic Events Center: The Civic Events Centre is a hub of recreational and cultural activity in the Estevan area. Penn West is proud to make a funding commitment to this new centre which will promote health, wellness, sportsmanship and culture, while encouraging economic growth and tourism in the Estevan area. |

Shaunavon & District Recreation Centre: Penn West supports the current construction of Wickenheiser Centre, the town's new recreation facility. Named after one of Shaunavon's hockey heroes, Hayley Wickenheiser, this four sheet curling rink and skating rink will be used year round for programs and event rentals, providing access to all area residents and promoting healthy lifestyles. |
Culture
Exposure to arts and culture unites people and celebrates heritage and diversity through a host of mediums. Penn West strives to increase awareness, access, and participation to meaningful experiences and events in our communities.

The Indian Village: The Indian Village has been a vital part of the Calgary Stampede since 1912 and represents First Nations people of Treaty 7. Penn West is proud to be the sponsor of Indian Village and Canadian heritage, and to make it accessible for others to learn and experience Aboriginal culture. |

Edmonton's Capital Exhibition: Capital EX is the biggest annual event in the Edmonton area, appealing to a large demographic of all ages and backgrounds. We are proud to serve as title sponsor of the performance stage, showcasing a variety of unforgettable cultural experiences - including storytellers, dancers, aboriginal fashion artists and a host of other performers throughout the ten day event. |
